10 years ago I took a leap of faith, quit my job and went to school to learn to cut hair. I thought about tattooing and motorcycle building as options but ultimately landed on barbering.
As a kid my mom told me frequently that I should cut hair. I looked at my life and wanted more than just a 9 to 5 job that paid the bills. I wanted to work with my hands, and add value to people’s lives. Cutting hair fit the bill and I’ve never looked back.
I’ve given first haircuts to the tiniest of the little dudes, helped young guys find their style, watched fathers and sons bond and old timers tell a tale or two. I have the privilege to call many great men clients. They come from all backgrounds and careers, with different styles and ideas. The Brickyard Barbershop is their place as much as it is mine.
I became a barber because I wanted a job that I could look forward to doing everyday for the next 30 years- one that would enable me to spend time with my wife and daughter, and give me the opportunity to have a positive impact on people.
My closest friends today started our as co-workers and clients. I’m invested in their lives and they’re invested in mine. I wouldn’t trade that for anything.
For me barbering is all about delivering a kickass haircut in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. My favorite part of the job is getting to know my clients, having great conversations, and making sure each person walks out my door looking and feeling great. Honestly, there’s no better way to spend my days. I’m extremely grateful to have been asked to be a part of this great group of barbers…and to work in a shop that allows me to show my tattoos.
At 27 years old with a baby on the way and no job, I decided it was time for a career. Barbering has turned out to be the perfect fit.
The tradition of the craft, the atmosphere of my workplace- it all works with my vision of a dream job. Brickyard will be a shop where I feel confident I’ll be able to hone my craft and learn something new every day.
Since getting out of the military I’d been on the lookout for something that excited me. I did construction, worked in kitchens, at golf courses…nothing made me happy. It all changed after a few haircuts and my barber suggested I go to barber school. My life was changed and everything I have now is because I had the guts to try something new. Nothing makes me happier than putting a smile on a customer’s face and making them look and feel great.
